Six students met at Cambridge University. Decided to give up their day jobs and form a rock band. In many instances that could sound like a recipe for failure. But Sports Team are not your regular, run of the mill, indie band. Steeped in sarcasm and with a tongue always firmly in cheek. The collective who derive from all over the UK, combine Pavement-esque anthems with a sense of humour only the British could possess.
A stream of killer singles released via Nice Swan records have been gathering pace since the release of their ‘Winter Nets’ EP at the very start of the year with ‘Kutcher’, their homage to the Punk’d teen dream, achieving Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’ alongside being Radio 1’s Track of the Week. Not to be outdone by radio play, the band took a coach full of sweaty fans and friends to Margate to celebrate the release of their following single, called, you guessed it, ‘Margate.’ And if any of that seemed moderately impressive, they managed to bag a headline performance on Reading & Leeds’ BBC Introducing Stage.
In short, the band have been working zealously to make sure they don’t slip from anyone’s minds anytime soon. And it seems to be working. Current darlings of the music press and beyond. They’ve featured in Time Out, The Guardian and even bagged a slot in Miss Vogue. They reached a career pinnacle when they headlined a sold-out show at London’s Scala.
